The Project Director (PD) will lead a global health security initiative aimed at strengthening public health surveillance systems and capacities. This role will involve strategic and technical oversight of activities that enhance national and regional surveillance infrastructure, build workforce capacity through training, and improve coordination between disease surveillance and laboratory systems. The PD will also guide efforts to reinforce emergency preparedness, advance electronic surveillance platforms, and promote the use of data for timely public health action.

Working closely with ministries of health, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) country offices, and key stakeholders, the PD will assess existing systems, identify gaps, and implement solutions to improve performance. The PD will also support cross-sectoral collaboration on One Health priorities, encourage the adoption of innovative technologies, and foster local capacity through workforce development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic planning and policy development for surveillance system strengthening, in alignment with CDC and country priorities.
  • Oversee the development, adaptation, and implementation of protocols, training materials, and guidance documents for surveillance and laboratory systems.
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness activities and ensure integration of surveillance data into actionable insights for decision-making.
  • Manage partnerships with ministries of health, CDC country offices, academic institutions, and other stakeholders to build and improve regional and country capacities to detect, respond to, control, and prevent infectious diseases and emerging threats.
  • Guide the development and enhancement of electronic disease surveillance platforms and systems.
  • Support the use of surveillance data for evidence-based policy decisions and timely public health interventions.
  • Facilitate cross-sectoral collaboration to address One Health priorities and strengthen border health security.
  • Ensure compliance with CDC and PATH policies, regulations, and internal controls.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in public health, epidemiology, medicine, veterinary medicine, or a related field, with a focus on infectious disease detection and surveillance.
  • At least nine years of experience in project management and operations, including three years supporting complex USG-funded projects (CDC experience strongly preferred).
  • Demonstrated expertise in global health security, epidemiology, disease surveillance, outbreak detection and response, emergency management, and response.
  • Experience in developing and implementing surveillance protocols, training materials, and guidance documents.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain partnerships with government entities, local organizations, academic institutions, and international agencies.
  • Experience with electronic disease surveillance platforms and data integration for public health action.
  • Professional fluency in spoken and written English.
